Measure horizontally
When you measure a window frame horizontally, it is important to measure the wall at three different points of the recess, so that you can determine the correct width. You measure at the top, in the middle and at the bottom of the frame to be replaced. The smallest size is leading when measuring window frames. You then subtract 1 centimeter (0.5 centimeters on both sides) from this measurement, so that you have enough slack. Wood is a material that works, which means it can expand and contract. That clearance is therefore very important when you measure your window frames.
You catch the slack by means of compriband. This is used for a rain-tight seal between building parts or building materials. Compriband lasts for many years and ensures that air and water do not enter through the frame.
Measure vertically
After you have measured your frames horizontally, measure the frame vertically, so that you can determine the height of the frame. In principle, you proceed in the same way as with the horizontal measurement of window frames. You measure again at three places in the opening and here too the smallest size is leading. The difference with measuring horizontally is that there may be a window sill at the bottom. If this is not available, measure from wall to wall and subtract 1 centimeter from the total size (0.5 cm on both sides).
If there is a window sill, then measure from the wall to the window sill. It is important to take into account that this sill slopes upwards and therefore takes up more space than you might think. For walls with a window sill, you subtract a total of 2 centimeters from the smallest size (1 cm for the sill and 0.5 cm on both sides).
Another option is to measure the top of the wall to the sill of the current frame for the height measurements and subtract a total of half a centimeter from this.
What do you use to measure?
There are special professional measuring tools to measure the dimensions of frames accurately to the millimeter. However, most private individuals and self-employed persons do not have these expensive, professional tools at their disposal. In that case, the sizes can be measured with a tape measure.
